NOWSPAR Urges Sata to Deliver for Women in Sport

24th September 2011- The NOWSPAR Executive Director Ms. Matilda Mwaba this morning presented a press release to congratulate His Excellency Michael Chilufya Sata and to recommend to him and government priority areas in women and sport issues. Please see the release below:

Your Excellency Michael Chilufya Sata,

On behalf of the National Organisation for Women in Sport Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR)

We congratulate you sir and the Patriotic Front on your successful election to Presidency of the Republic of Zambia

We look forward to the coming five years with optimism and confidence in your will and ability to act in favor of the development of sport and important to us women’s development and participation in sport

Sport is a right that is recognized in human rights instruments, we believe your government can make a positive contribution to make the right to sport and empowerment a reality for women and girls in Zambia

We urge the government under your leadership to do the following:

1.Accelerate and finalize the review and adoption of a new National Sports Council of Zambia Act and will clearly commit to gender equity measures in line with the SADC Protocol on Gender and Women’s Empowerment
2.To formulate regulation to ensure every sport institution including schools, associations and clubs that receives resources from the government, financial or in-kind, to implement gender equity measures
3.Align implementation of the National Sports Policy to the gender equality targets in the National Development Plan and in line with human rights instruments
4.Commit to investing in community sport and recreation facilities and systems and ensure access by young people and the elderly, further invest in the City Councils to enable them provide safe recreation spaces and parks accessible to all.
5.Domestication of human rights instruments that address gender equality, protection of women from gender based violence and foster women’s development
6.Invest in sport institutions and facilitate adequate resources for management, marketing, administration and implementation of sport programs in both school and non school based frameworks

International Paralympic Day 2011

International Paralympic Day 2011 is showcasing the 20 Paralympic sports at London 2012, enabling the public to find out more about next year’s Games.

In Zambia, the National Paralympic Committee has partnered with the British Council, NOWSPAR, Edusport and Sport in Action to host a Paralympic Day on 15th October 2011 to highlight the London 2012 Paralympic events.

Today’s showcase is hosted by the London 2012 Organising Committee, it will feature demonstrations in sports including Wheelchair Basketball, Powerlifting and Wheelchair Rugby.
Top international Paralympic athletes including gold medallist Oscar Pistorius will be in action, while spectators can also witness a Guinness World Record moment for Sitting Volleyball.
